When I was a child growing up on the south coast of England, the sea was part of my life; a source of fascination, danger and beauty existing alongside the town in which I lived. I fished for newts, eels and sticklebacks in safer locales; streams, ponds and rivers, and kept them in tanks at my school and at home. I obsessively drew detailed pictures of fish, copying them from text books borrowed from the library. Jacques Cousteau's tv specials were favorite viewing, along with Gerry Anderson's Stingray and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. The underwater world was as important to me as that of school and home. After years spent making crazy theater productions and tv animation series, I turned 40 and found myself living in California. With a little more savings in my bank account, I decided to learn to scuba dive. I took to it easily, and the ocean again became part of my life. I became a PADI 'Master Diver' in 2002.
Finally, a few years ago, when painting had become my major artistic outlet, I realized that I needed to start combining these two loves, and try to capture what it felt like to be under the ocean experiencing this beautiful, fragile, hostile environment - especially in the cold, but exceptionally rich, Californian waters close to my home. I feel like I have only just begun this phase of my art career, and am excited to see how it will progress.
